It's Not Like I Did This!

Monday night I spent some serious time getting some amazing orange roll dough ready to roll out for FHE. I promised Jedi Master he could help. Orange rolls are rolled out like cinnamon rolls but filled with sugar, orange peel and dried cranberries. Our dough was all rolled out into a beautiful, soft, stretchy rectangle. We were waiting for Padawan to wash his hands so he could join us when JM did a loud sniff right over the dough telling me it smelled good.

From the sniff I could tell that there was a lot more going on inside his big-kid nose than just air and so I said, "Please don't do that; you don't want to accidentally get boogers on the dough."

He said, "It's not like I did this!" He leaned over the dough and did a farmer blow. A huge booger striped its way across the beautiful dough. I screamed. He screamed. This is a child who only learned how to blow into a tissue about three weeks ago. And yet, already, his blowing skill is very advanced.

Still, Elder Wirthland said that we needed to learn to laugh more at ourselves. It took a few minutes, but I was able to.

October was a very full month for us. Earlier in the month I put up several pictures from my parents' visit. A few days after they left, Padawan's pre-school went to the pumpkin patch. His outfit is totally ridiculous, but he is so happy. This is Padawan's best little buddy. We'll call her the Princess, and these two are just hilarious together. For all her petite cuteness, she is a bit rough and tumble and loves boy toys. Padawan kept telling her which pumpkins to pick because he didn't want to get dirty. Very gentlemanly.

Later that afternoon, my in-laws came into town for several days. While they were here, we took a trip to the coast and to another pumpkin patch. The kids also painted and carved some pumpkins, but I haven't taken those pictures yet.

The day after they left, we had the Star-Wars-Party-O-Rama here at our house. I was pretty much feeling like mother of the year: at least on THAT day. I've never seen so much 6 and 7 year old aggression when I said "light saber" and "pinata" in the same sentence.

Two days after Jedi Master's Party, I was in charge of our Relief Society's "Souper" Saturday. I haven't said anything about this here, though it has consumed many of my thoughts and too much of my energy since late August. I'm trying hard to have a better attitude about my calling (Enrichment Leader) and we DID end up with a really great turn out. Maybe nine months from now (it takes three months to plan the dang thing) I'll be geared up for it again. Maybe. Anyway, here are some pictures of the results of one of the craft classes that I ran:

Last night was Jedi Master's soccer banquet. It must be admitted that they were pretty much the worst team ever. (Okay, like anyone can know that . . . .) We only scored a few goals all season and got a very thorough thumping from every team we played. When I told Jedi that we were headed to have a pizza party with his soccer team he was very excited, but when I told him he was getting a trophy, he said, "Why?"

Why, indeed.

The selected trophy is a boy kicking a soccer ball. Instead of a head, he has a bobble soccer head. The trophy is personalized. Kind of. The spelling of Jedi Master's first and last name is so butchered that I'm not exactly certain if the trophy was intended for us. Whoever heard of a bobblehead trophy?

That's what I want to know. What did you do with the dough? Good job on the Souper Saturday. I'm not going to say that I don't ever want to be in charge of one. Because then I would jinx myself. :p And I have to disagree with you on the soccer team. I think the one Tyler was on in the Spring, coached by Dave, was the worst ever. They didn't even care about winning, it was a party if they scored at all. :p

I loved all the pictures and your hair is amazing!!! The pumpkin patch picture was particularly cool for me. I don't think I've ever seen a patch that big. And I am so impressed with how crafty you have become! :) Good job, lady!

Love the pictures! You should get mother of the year with that amazing birthday party!
Is the reading program you talked about in the comments section of your last post called "reading recovery"? Just curious - it is what we use here, and it does wonders for the kids who are struggling readers.

I'm hoping you still cooked the orange rolls. Baked snot can't be that bad for you, right?
Maybe you'll have a new calling before next Souper Saturday. But I guess there are some things worse than enrichment leader. (I must say that teaching institute is fun, but I wasn't thrilled with the prospect when it first was proposed to me.)
And great photos. I need to start taking more, I suppose. What's the fun of living in a Third World country if you don't have photos to remind yourself of all the fun you had?

You guys always look like you are having a blast as a family. The pics of the ocean are beautiful.

I am totally bowled over by your awesomeness! You made orange rolls. (Or did you?) Did you make that rolled fondant birthday cake? Whoa! You get to live near the ocean. Because I've been land-locked my entire life, the ocean still seems like fairy tale land to me. Those photos over the water look professional. I'm trying hard not to be jealous. And your super saturday crafts were so cute! I'm not really the decorator/craftsy kind of girl. If isn't not a sewing project, I probably don't do it. (Although I do like to make cards. Simple cards.) And hey, that pumpkin patch had petunias growing in it. You would never want to buy a pumpkin here in CV that has remained in the field until the week before Halloween. It's been forzen too many times and is all mushy. BTW, I'm dying to know what you did about the orange rolls. (That was one way to make them unappealing for this low-carb dieter. :)

Thanks for stopping by. I have to say you guys look like you are having a ton of fun in Oregon. Also, I agree with everyone else that the cake is amazing!

Who doesn't love a good boogar story?

Your pictures are gorgeous! I love the little hand hold picture, you could frame that and hang it on your wall. What a pretty pumpkin patch too, not like the ones here.

Now for true confession time:

I cut out the booger part (not very large but the dough is so elasticky that it caused a five inch gap in the edge); cut off the ends of the dough and patched the hole, rolling it into the middle of the rolls. The kids were totally nonpulssed. House of boys, remember? I figure that they eat them raw all the time.

I did NOT make the cake. Math and Science girl here, remember? I did, however, build the spaceship on the top of the lovely cake and the whole black fondant with white stars thing WAS my idea. I have a friend who makes cakes. I am doing an exchange with her for it--I'm going to give her daughter some freebie math tutoring.

Plantboy took most of the pictures: any that you find especially gorgeous were undoubtedly his doing.

And Slim, my hair is NOT amazing. I just know when there is going to be picture-taking and plan a little better on those days. I'm strictly ponytail girl about 90% of the time.

But, by all means, keep bringing the love. You are all so sweet I wish I could get everyone together for a big party.

I love how some grown-ups think every kid needs a trophy to boost their self-esteem, and the kids themselves think the notion is silly. :)

Cool party. What are the odds I'll be able to talk my daughter into a Star Wars birthday party instead of a princess one? Maybe we'll have to compromise and settle for Dora.

The dreaded Bobblehead Trophy!!!!

Here's the awarded fug that one of my daughters received for a dance recital last year. It is super creepy. Especially when the head broke and it nows rotates a full 360 degrees ala The Exorcist.

i was thinking about the bobble-head trophies. maybe they're fans of the office? ;)

I can't remember if it was Sydney or Brooklyn who was once stirring a big pitcher of O.J. and sneezed right into it. There was no way to salvage that one.

Love this post! Love that you laughed at the snotty-dough (don't know if I could) but that story is definitely a keeper! Love the pictures--love your cake! love your paint cans. Guess who else is enrichment leader--it's like throwing a huge party every 3 months--definitely not up my alley.
